Although it may look so, Asuka's life has not always been happy. The tragic story started when she was just a little girl. Her mother, Kyoko Zepplin Sohryu, was a technician engineer and test pilot for the Evangelion in the early production days. But during one of the test activations, an accident occured. She blamed it on herself, and she went insane.
From then on, she stopped taking care of Asuka and completley neglected her. In fact, she even bought a doll, and named it Asuka, to replace her real child. She did it because she regretted so much the fact that she spent too much time on her work and not enough with Asuka. She addressed the real Asuka as "that girl over there". Every day Asuka would go to the hospital room to see her mother, just to be ignored again.
Then, one day, the only good news in this rotten story came to be. She was chosen as an Evangelion pilot! She was to pilot Eva Unit-02. As soon as she heard the news, she ran home to tell her Mother. "Mama, they chose me! I'm an elite pilot now. I am the best in the whole world! I must keep this a secret, but I'll only tell you Mama. Everybody's so nice to me now. I don't feel lonely anymore. I'm okay now, even without papa. Look at me, look at me Mama. LOOK MAMA!" But when she got home and saw her Mom, she was hanging by the neck from the ceiling, and the doll was sitting next to her, beheaded. Asuka held onto the doll, and cryed and cryed.
Being smart and pretty, she would still be able to succeed without her. But the question was, could she stay strong? Indeed she did. She made a life-long commitment to forget all her bad memories and to never cry again. In order to do so, she would always stay better at everything than everybody else. In addition to hiding her memories of her childhood from everyone, she also hid them from herself. She matured very quickly, graduating college at age 14! She was always happy and optimistic (maybe not to others, but STILL!). And she seemed to be the only pilot that enjoyed piloting her Eva. When you look at her, and then look at Shinji, it makes you feel sorry for him, the misery he has piloting his Eva. She treasured her title as the "2nd Child", because this gave her a meaning, and not "that girl over there."
Later on however, a series of events started to cause her downfall in self esteem. First of all, in episode #16, Shinji Ikari,(The 3rd Child, who pilots Unit-01), his sync ratio boosted up past hers. This made her mad. Later on from that, she lost a battle later on to an enemy much stronger than her, and was forced to have to be saved by Unit-01. Then, the biggest event struck her. An Angel, the 15th Angel to be exact, mentally "raped" her, causing her to relive all her bad memories in her mind. The Angel had ressurected all the terrible feelings and emotions that Asuka had successfully forgotten long ago. Having all these bad memories back in her, she lost all confidence and stopped trying at anything. Her sync ratios dropped down below 10%, and her crying that she promised not to do, came back. In fact, one time when they sent her out to battle, she let the Angel attack her because she just wanted to die. "When I didn't win with my Eva, I lost whatever value I might have had. I hate . . . everything. And I hate myself the most. I don't care about anything anymore. There's no point." She eventually slipped into a coma and was put into a hospital room. The series ended with her in catatonic state, unaware of her surroundings, a vegetable, practically. Later on, however, in the movies she snaps out of her coma, and, is pissed off, and, well you'll have to watch the movies to see what happens...
